  • The active element of a ribbon microphone is a very thin corrugated aluminum strip, clamped under tension between two strong magnets. This design can make ribbon microphones very sensitive and fragile. Many ribbon microphones require special care and handling. It is a very bad idea to blow into a ribbon mic, put it directly in front of a kick drum, or loud amplifier speaker. Avoid strong blasts of air of any sort, since this can rip or stretch the ribbon element, changing the response or worse. It is a good idea to use a pop filter, when possible, to eliminate vocal spray or sudden air movement. Dropping any microphone is to be avoided – especially a ribbon microphone. Never apply any phantom power to your ribbon microphone. Phantom power will not destroy a ribbon microphone but a patch bay or faulty cable that shorts to ground with phantom power on can. So, avoid phantom power. Always keep the microphone covered in the bag or case provided, when not in use. The strong magnets can attract "tramp metal" and impinge the ribbon movement. Damaged ribbons due to neglect are not covered by our warranty* and there may be a charge to replace them.
